Tim Perimeter

At the VMC, we know what it means to serve.

The majority of our staff are Veterans themselves who understand the challenges Vets face when coming home. Our Executive Director, Retired Army Col. Tim Williams, is no exception...

This week, he told Philly.com about his transition to civilian life:

"My entire identity was tied up in wearing a uniform since I was 17," he said. "I turned 18 in basic training. Emotionally, retirement was tough on me. I thought I was ready… but I wasn't prepared mentally for what happened to me…

"I'm a Special Forces guy. I thrive on volatile and uncertain environments. So it took me six months to come to grips with never wearing a uniform again."

Williams has seen many friends leave the service and "have nothing to strive for, and get lost. Or some come home with issues which are exacerbated" without daily routines.

Now, he is dedicated to helping his fellow Veterans make the transition.

He oversees our staff of 135 people across 11 facilities in three states, including two transitional-housing facilities on the grounds of Coatesville VA Medical Center; a thrift store on Frankford Avenue; and Central PA and South Jersey.

The VMC is no small operation, but there is a lot of work to be done.

"I am the wife of a Viet Nam Veteran. My husband started going to PVMSEC 10 years ago for help. No mere words could ever express how much his life and in turn our family life has changed for the better in those years. I am and always will be grateful for the wonderful care he has received at the Philadelphia Veterans Multi-Service Center & Education Center."
